March 10, 2010. Here is another look at how the book industry finished in 2009. The Census Bureau apparently keeps track of book store sales in dollars. Book store sales were down 0.8% in 2009 when compared to 2008. This is a little surprising given 2008 was not a good year, finishing 1.8% below 2007. More importantly, the fourth quarter of 2009 lagged behind 2008’s fourth quarter when the recession was at one of its toughest stages. While most might have thought the economy was in some sort of recovery in Q4 2009, apparently that was not the case for books at the retail level.
